You know you are a child of the 80's when....

I am a child of the 80's.

When I hear the words "Strawberry Shortcake" my first thought isn't this:

It's this:

Scented dolls - whoever came up with that is a genius!

My first fashion icon:

Me and my friends were all Jem girls.  In fact, I think JEM is still an inspiration today:

Did someone say "fierce"?  She-Ra was fierce.  And I wanted her to marry He-Man.

Remember slap bracelets?  These were the best thing since jelly shoes.  Until they were banned.

We also had the BEST hair accessories one could ever ask for.

And the fashion.... oh, the fashion...

You know you had one in every color.

Michael started the scrunched sock trend.

Touch me.  Please.

I apologize to this lovely couple,
but I found their photo on Google.
Tight-rolled jeans - the wrong way.

Photobucket
...and the correct way.
If only we'd known then what we know now.

The 80's was also when I first encountered the concept of refashioning clothing.  Too bad I thought that dress was hideous. (Still do).

but I loved Molly Ringwald's outfit here:

Of course, I can't talk about the 80's without mentioning my first real crush. He was Born To be MY Baby.

As I've grown older my tastes have evolved and changed, but I'll always remember my childhood with fondness.

Some things, however, never change....

When I was a kid (of the 80s), the local very fancy department store had a "Design a Dress" contest. The winner would have her dress made for her. I think I was...seven? Eight? Anyway, my dress was totally based on Lime Chiffon's pale green frock with pink and white flowers around the hem. I wanted that dress so badly! I didn't win; some older girl won with an elegant asymmetrical t-shirt dress of navy and black, IIRC. My mom showed me the girl with her design in the newspaper. I remember thinking, "how boring!"

My toddler now loves the modern Strawberry Shortcake Saturday cartoons. I'll have to see if I can dig up my old dolls when I'm at the family homestead next time.

What a great memory. I'm sorry you didn't win :( LOL I totally would have designed a strawberry shortcake dress! Either that, or a Smurfette dress.

I haven't checked out the modern Strawberry Shortcake cartoons. Are they still good, or did they ruin it?
